Turn Tunes is a manual record player that encourages the listener to participate with their music.
Persona
Sophia is a 32 year old mother to a five year old girl.
Some of her fondest memories as a child are playing with a music box with her mother. She remembers the challenge of turning the handle at the correct speed to get the music to play at the perfect tempo. There was a certain joy and satisfaction that came with it.
Like many millennial parents, Sophia wants to buy toys that will stimulate learning and not end up in the landfill within a year.
When Sophia’s mother comes for a visit, all three of them spend hours playing with the same music box of Sophia’s youth.
Sophia is looking for a way to insert her own twist on what has become a favorite family past time. She wants to expose her daughter to music and also bridge the generational gap.

How It Works
Having decided the aesthetic form,
I needed to figure out how the internal mechanics would work.
90° gears redirect the force of the manual crank to a rubber pulley which ultimately spins the record platter.
